Pericardial Effusion
• Accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity
• Causes include
- Trauma, inflammation, hemorrhage, infection, cancer, radiation therapy, kidney failure, autoimmune disorder and idiopathic
• If the onset is rapid or the volume is large, it may cause compression of the heart and restrict motion

Cardiac tamponade
A complication of a large pericardial effusion
Cardiac tamponade
Diminishes the force of heart contractions
Cardiac tamponade
May be life-threatening

life threatening
Cardiac tamponade: May be __________________
Cardiac tamponade
Pressure on the heart that occurs when blood or fluid builds up in the space between the heart muscle and the outer covering of the heart
Cardiac tamponade
Excess pressure from the fluid prevents the heart from functioning normally and the body doesn't receive enough blood.
