PURPOSE/ QUESTION
1st step of the scientific method: The purpose is when you state the problem. It describes the reason you are doing this experiment.
RESEARCH
2nd step of the scientific method: Research is when you gather information and materials needed for this lab. This is where you will also identify the independent and dependent variables and the constant.
HYPOTHESIS
3rd step of the scientific method: A hypothesis is your educated guess /prediction as to what the results will be. Your hypothesis should be completed in the "If...then...because" style
PROCEDURES
4th step of the scientific method: The procedures are the steps used to design and do an experiment.
RESULTS
5th step of the scientific method: The results are the data that was collected and analyzed during the experiment. Results are often in the form of a table.
CONCLUSION
6th step of the scientific method: The conclusion is a summary or answer to the problem based on the data. Was your prediction correct?
REPEAT THE WORK
7th step of the scientific method: Scientists should never assume that the first result will always occur. A true scientist will test and retest in order to accurately determine consistent results.
Independent Variable
The factors changed (or controlled) by the scientist designing the experiment; levels are set before doing experiment
Dependent Variable
The factor that is being measured during the experiment
Constant
Any factor that stays the same during the experiment—should have multiple ones—why? To ensure a "fair test" experiment
Control
The group in an experiment that is NOT given any of the chosen amounts of treatment of independent variable; -can be negative or positive;
Negative Control
contains none of the treatment
Positive Control
contains all of the treatment
Quantitative data
Data that uses numbers; data that is precisely measured
Qualitative data
Data that is expressed in words—using language/letters/words to make observations that compare or rate in order
