In Angle-Saxon times, people had slaves. A slave escaped from his master and went to the castle of the dragon. The slave then decided after seeing the gold that he would take his master a present and hope the master did not hurt him when he returned. The dragon stayed in the castle and slept on the gold, and guarded it. When the slave took a gold cup, the dragon was awakened and began to terrorize the people of Geatland in its anger at the slave for taking the gold from him.
Explain what woke the dragon.
The story of Beowulf was first told in AD 520, before writing or Christianity was introduced to England. Therefore the story was passed down orally with pagan elements. In AD 597, Christianity was introduced to the Anglo-Saxon people who then added Christian elements the pagan story. In AD 1000, he story was finally written down, and it included the original pagan elements but also the Christian elements that had been added. Examples of the pagan elements in the story are when the people talked of having good omens Beowulf leaves Geatland and about "fate" deciding the winner of the battle against Grendel.
Christian elements include references to Cain, Adam and Eve's son in the book of Genesis in the bible, and also the people saying God will decide who wins the battle against Grendel.
