Science Genetics 4:1, 4:2
Terms in this set (24)
Passing of physical characteristics from parent to offspring.
Specific characteristics, ex. stem height, seed color.
The scientific study of heredity.
When sperm and egg cells join.
Offspring of many generations that have the same form of the trait.
Description of factors that control a trait.
Different forms of a gene, ex. stem height.
Trait that always shows up in an organism when the allele is present, ex. yellow pea seed.
Trait that is hidden when the dominant allele is present, ex. green pea seed.
Contains two different alleles for a trait, ex. a mutt (poodle and german shepherd.)
Why do some family members look similar while others look different?
The family members that look alike must have the same dominant traits.
Why would it be necessary to cut off the stamens on the plant?
Because the plant self-pollinates itself and reproduces. If you cut them off and mix them with a different plant, the offspring will have different traits.
What is a purebred organism?
An offspring of many generations that has the same form of the trait as its parents.
When Mendel crossed a purebred tall plant with a purebred short plant, what did he find?
That the purebred tall plant is dominant over the short plant.
Are the plants in the F1 generation purebred plants? Why?
Yes because in order to make the F1 generation, Mendel crossed a purebred short plant and a purebred tall plant, (two purebreds.)
Name two kinds of alleles.
Tall stems and short stems
What must be true for the trait controlled by a recessive allele to be seen?
You would have to combine the recessive plant with another recessive plant.
Why were purebred pea plants so important for Mendel's experiments?
Without them, Mendel would not be able to find the dominant trait.
What are two kinds of seed shape?
Wrinkled and round
Which shape is the result of a dominant trait?
What combinations of alleles will produce round seeds?
How would you write the alleles for a plant that is purebred?
How would you write the alleles for the offspring of a cross between a purebred tall plant and a purebred short plant?
What term did Mendel use for an individual with one dominant allele and one recessive allele?
