Medical Board of Examiners

regulatory agency for P.A.'s

Clinical Nurse Specialist

is a professional RN with an advanced academic degree, experience, and expertise in a clinical specialty (eg. ob, pediatrics, psychiatry)

Nurse Practitioner

RN's who have completed the necessary education to engage in primary healthcare decision making

EMTALA

Law which states that NO patient can be denied medical treatment

Emergency Medical Condition

a medical condition manifesting itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that the absence of immediate medical attention could reasonably be expected to result in (i) placing the health of the individual in serious jeopardy, (ii) serious impairment to bodily functions, or (iii) serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part; or
(B) respect to a pregnant woman who is having contractions, (i) that there is inadequate time to effect safe transfer to another facility before delivery, or (ii) that transfer may pose a threat to the health or safety of the woman or unborn child

Medical review board

1st a case goes to this group, made up of 3 physicians. If you sue a physician or hospital the case goes to State Court.

Federal Court

if sued under EMTALA the case goes to this court

Paramedics

entity that delivers patients to the closest available hospital and typically work for county or parish

Sexual Impropriety

when this happens, it is not considered medical malpractice and therefore is not covered by malpractice insurance. also no limits to compensation
