Where are the hematopoietically active sites in adults?
Vertebrae, ribs, sternum
Pelvis (posterior and anterior iliac crests)
Scapula, skull
Extreme proximal ends of the femur and humerus
The BM cavity is partially compartmentalized into __________________ and ________________ by plates of bone ________________ protruding at right angles to the external medullary bone.
The BM cavity is partially compartmentalized into CORDS and SINUSES by plates of bone TRABECULAE protruding at right angles to the external medullary bone.
What is the bone cavity?
Part of the BM that is compartmentalized into cords and sinuses by horizontal trabeculae
Where does arterial flow of blood end?
In the capillary bed of bone
What are venous sinusoids?
Where capillaries re-enter bone marrow and fuse, covered mostly endothelial cells, but some reticulum cells
What type of cells cover the venous sinusoids?
endothelial cells
reticulum cells
What are reticulum cells?
Control movement of marrow cells into vascular system by increasing/decreasing their coverage of endothelim
What are cords?
Spaces between venous sinusoids. Wedge shaped. Have hematopoietic cells with specific order.
What are megakaryocytes?
Produce platelets. Found next to venous sinus
What are platelets.
Small fragments that bud off the megakaryocyte through venous wall directly into circulation
Where are erythroid cells produced?
Produced close to venous sinus. Forced into sinus by pressure growth in cord. Only slightly motile at the retic stage. Found surrounding histiocyte--called an erythropoietic island
Which cells of the BM are motile?
myeloid, lymph, and monos.
Where do myeloid, lymph, and mono cells develop?
Away from the vein and enter circulation under their own power.
What 3 things is cell migration from the BM to peripheral blood dependent on?
1. Blood flow through sinus
2. Cell deformability
3. % sinuses covered with reticulum cells
Describe newborn vs. adult hematopoiesis:
First months: yolk sac
5 months: liver and spleen
Birth: bone marrow
>age 10: axial skeleton
