Science
Knowledge obtained by observing natural events and conditions in order to discover facts
Observation
Any use of the sense to gather information and record it
Independent Variable
The condition in the experiment that is changed on purpose
Dependent Variable
The condition in the experiment that results from that change
Scientific Method (Process)
A series of steps to scientists use to solve problems systematically
X-axis
The horizontal axis in graphs, where the independent variable goes
Y-axis
The vertical axis in graphs, where the dependent variable goes
Claim
Statement about the results of an investigation, usually supported by evidence.
Evidence
Collected body of data from observations and experiments to support the claim.
Reasoning
Explanation that ties together the claim and evidence. Describes why or how the claim is supported by evidence.
Data
Numerical information gathered from observations or experimentation.
First Aid
Emergency medical care for someone who has been hurt or who is sick.
Hypothesis
A testable idea or explanation that leads to scientific investigation.
Law
A descriptive statement or equation that reliably predicts events under certain conditions.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object.
Mean
Average. The number obtained by adding up the data for a given characteristic and dividing up this sum by the number of individuals.
Model
A pattern, plan, representation or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept.
Slope
A measure of the slant of a line; the ratio of rise over run.
Scientific Theory
A system of ideas that explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence acquired through scientific investigation.
Temperature
A measure of how hot (or cold) something is; specifically, a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.
Volume
A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space.
Median
The value of the middle item when data are arranged in order by size.
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance.
