Most important focus when presenting the book
Don't focus on the details. Focus on the person that you are giving the book to. Tell them what the Book means to you and why you wanted to give it to them. Tell them you are giving it to them because you respect, trust, and love them.
Joseph Fielding Smith on studying the BofM
It seems to me that any member of this Church would never be satisfied until he or she had read the Book of Mormon time and time again, and thoroughly considered it so that he or she could bear witness that it is in very deed a record with the inspiration of the Almighty upon it, and that its history is true."
Purpose of memorizing scriptures
Internalize and reference to when you really need it
Packets of light in time of darkness
Reading vs. studying (David A. Bednar)
Pray for understanding and invite the help of the holy ghost, apply the principle of work while reading the scriptures, have consistency, and ponder.
"Think, feel, discover, expand, remember, dream." Bro. Wilcox uses these points to elaborate on his idea that "keeping a journal helps us learn who we are." Thoughts are created in the act of writing.
Purposes of BofM
Invite all to come to Christ, show the covenant path, and show the great things God has given us. It also verifies and clarifies the Bible. It helps you to know the covenants of the Lord. (1- great things, 2 - know the covenants, 3-testify of Jesus Christ)
when was the subtitle added
BofM as keystone, Ezra Taft Benson's elaboration on keystone
It's 1) a witness of Christ, 2) base of our doctrine (and the doctrine of the resurrection), and 3) the foundation of our testimonies.
Contents of brass plates
Much of the Old Testament and other lost OT records/prophets -- the records of the tribe of JOSEPH, Lehi's genealogy, etc. (Lehi was the spiritual leader of this tribe, therefore he had a right to the records, according to Bro. Wilcox)
5 books of moses, record of the prophets of joseph
Difference between large and small plates of Nephi
Small = Spiritual
Large = Secular history (wars)
What the "gold" plates were probably made of
Copper and gold alloy: Tumbaga
How long the translation took
Significance of how the BofM came forth
Joseph Smith Jr. was not a learned man. A learned man couldn't translate the book. The Dead Sea Scrolls were found, translated by scholars, but haven't changed any lives. If we believe in the Book of Mormon, we have to believe that God is active in our lives.
BofM= fullness of gospel
Points to modern doctrine and is the keystone of our religion
Urim and Thummim
Urim: Lights Thummim: Perfections..."the light in all its perfection"
BofM= most correct book
The first principles of the gospel are written in full. "A man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts than by any other book." (Intro of BoM)
Additional knowledge we have once we know the BofM is true
1) Jesus is the Christ,God is Jesus Christ's and our Heavenly Father, that 2) Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and that 3) the Church of Jesus Christ is the Lord's church on earth in preparation for the second coming.

Moroni was his mentor

one of 6 original founders, patriarch, assistant president, took Oliver's place in carthage, temple direction was under his control, martyred to seal his testimony
First missionary, converted John Green (brother in law of Brigham Young), went to carthage to help his brothers, lost 3 smith brothers @ carthage
Significance of the number of witnesses
like the 12 Apostles ((12 is the Hebrew number of perfect government or witnesses))
Why God doesn't always give us a perfect knowledge
If God always proved himself, He would be limiting our agency. So we can have FAITH and grow!
Value of eyewitnesses
Eyewitnesses are like proof. It helps us to more fully believe and convince others as well, without forcing us to believe.
Moroni's purpose atop temples
Symbolizes the restoration, spreading the gospel, and 2nd coming.
significance of witnesses staying true to their testimonies despite leaving the Church
They absolutely would not deny what they saw. They saw the Book of Mormon. If they had wanted to hurt Joseph, they could have denied their testimonies, but even though some of them went against Joseph, they never denied their testimonies!
the words occur in a peculiar sequence. Everything gets said twice, and in the repetition everything gets said backwards, back to front, or in a reverse order." lds.org. Example- It's nice to be important but more important to be nice. It's all over the Book of Mormon and Bible. It's a form of Hebrew poetry. Jack Welch discovered it in the book of mormon
Wealthy parents, Nephi is telling how he got the education he had, thus legitimizing his writings (ancient world custom of starting a written work) according to some scholars and Brother Wilcox.
"I and my father"
The way of speaking would not be one that Joseph was familiar with or even knew about (English grammar uses "my father and I"- same thing with "Book OF Mormon" rather than "Mormon's Book" etc.)
Greatest geological evidence of the Book of Mormon. Real place off of the arabian peninsula. Germans found 4 altar stones with that name in 1998. It is an ancient BURIAL GROUND - and Ishmael was buried there in the Book of Mormon.
A word print is comparing the way that different authors write. By doing this, they saw that the Book of Mormon was written by several different authors that match when new authors are supposed to be writing. (Nor did match any of the the Restoration people)
Ancient sea travel
thor Higherdol said that voyages by sea was possible back then. A contiki was a boat that went across the ocean (it was made of reeds)
Usually people traveling by sea would stay along the coast line for their direction
Joseph Smith would not know that.
Text complexity (consistency in dating systems, accurate citations, hundreds of characters)
500 pages, 3 dating systems, political systems, hundreds of character names and they are all consistent! Joseph had to have had help divine help. (Modern books with lots of editors, still have errors slip through)
Why Joseph Smith had to be in the United States
Religious freedom was here in the US and nowhere else to start the church.
Why Joseph Smith could not have written the book (according to Hugh Nibley)
not enough knowledge in the 1830s to write a book of that historical background in a semester (or 65 days) NO ONE could have written the BofM with the current knowledge in that time period!
Our response to people who say Joseph was possessed by a devil
Why would the devil bring about a book that helps us to believe in and act like Christ? Whatsoever is good is of God.
Why complexity of text is an evidence of truthfulness
Only if Joseph was translating from an already existing record, by the power of God could he have kept all those details straight (because he was:) -- all this while using no notes and picking up exactly where he left off the time before! What a miracle!!
How Lehi and those who knew him responded to truth (3)
Jerusalem: Ridicule, Lehi & Nephi: Faith + Action, Laman & Lemuel: murmuring, Sariah: ?
Year Lehi left Jerusalem
Relationship between Lehi and Jeremiah
Jeremiah was a prophet to the tribe of Judah. Lehi was a prophet to the tribe of Joseph.
How is it that Lehi was in Jerusalem
Lehi's father fled to Jerusalem because they wanted religous freedom from the northern tribes and were following the Levites after they were forced out by the northern tribes (As we know, Lehi eventually fled Jerusalem too.)
Controlling power over Jerusalem and the time of Lehi
Babylon (Zedekiah was a puppet king)
Matching Lehi's dream with parable of the sower Choked by thorns-
in Lehi's dream these are the people who begin following the path but lose their way when the mists of darkness arise. The thorns are the material, worldly things that lead people away.
Matching Lehi's dream with parable of the sower Seeds that fell on stony ground but didn't last
in Lehi's dream, these are the people who feel ashamed because of partaking of the fruit of the gospel of Christ and stopped partaking of the fruit and were lost.
Matching Lehi's dream with parable of the sower Fell by wayside and eaten by birds
In Lehi's dream they are the ones that entered the great and spacious building or drowned in the fountain.
Matching Lehi's dream with parable of the sower Fruitful seeds

Oasis, had ore & fruit & honey, in Oman (does exist)
Definition of House of Israel
literally the descendants of Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. Symbolically though in the scriptures (such as Isaiah and 2 Nephi) it means the covenant people of the Lord

A double portion
Coat of many colors
-coat was passed to joseph as a symbol of his birthright from reuben to him
-coat could be translated to garment
All but Benjamin and Judah
Firstborn of Jacob's sons (through Leah), had original birthright - but lost it, so went to Joseph (the firstborn son of Rachel)
In charge of the Priesthood, (does not have a LAND of inheritance. Instead his descendants were in charge of the Priesthood (the Aaronic/Levitical Priesthood) and were among the other tribes, did the work in the Temple, offered sacrifices, etc.)
Purpose of a chosen people
-to be leaders and servants
-To gather israel together
- Remember the cruise ship analogy. We are not passengers. We are part of the crew.
Tribes of Lehi and Ishmael
Sticks of Judah and Joseph
the "scriptures" or "books" of these two tribes (or the books written by their descendants). For Judah, it is the bible. For Joseph it is the Book of Mormon. In the last days they shall become "one" in the Lord's hand (as they now have in the true Church
A place where we have freedom to make and keep covenants, a land of promises, we have it as long as we keep God's commandments.
Pillars of eternity (Bruce R. McConkie)
The Creation, the Fall, and the Atonement. Remember the chart he drew making distinctions about what the world, Christians, and we think about these three pillars. The pillars support freedom and agency.
LDS view of creation (2)
We watched it, and probably helped it happen. It was done by the power of the priesthood. It also probably wasn't done in 6 days with 24 hours in each day. The Lord's timespan of "6 days" could mean 6 million years.
There is a distinction between "Savior" and "Redeemer." A Savior saves us. That is what Christians believe: 'Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we are saved." But Jesus Christ, our redeemer doesn't just want us to return to Heavenly Father. He wants us to return to Heavenly Father as a better person.
Satan knows he's not going to win, but he knew that the Fall would put his plans into motion to make us miserable and to take us away from God.
