Lab 4: Integumentary System
Terms in this set (40)
Layer of epidermis where there is the most rapid cell division
tough water-repellant epidermal layer; contains dead squamous shaped cells
areolar connective tissue layer beneath the basement membrane
projections of dermis that cause epidermal ridges
translucent layer found in thick skin, absent in thin skin
appears to have thorn like projections in prepared slides
keratinocytes of the stratum spinosum
thick dermal layer containing dense, irregular connective tissue
reticular layer of the dermis
epidermal layer containing visible granules
dermal layer with hair follicles and glands
dermis --reticular region
Name the epidermal cell type that....
defends skin against microbes
Name the epidermal cell type that.... produces keratin
Name the epidermal cell type that....produces the pigment melanin which shields cell nucleus from UV radiation
Name the epidermal cell type that....is associated with sensory neurons and functions in sensation of touch
Name the epidermal cell type that....composes 8% of epidermal cells...90%? 2%? 2%?
90% = keratinocytes,
8% = melanocytes,
2% = langerhans cells,
2% = merkel cells,
sudoriferous glands located in axillary and genital areas; become active after puberty
apocrine sweat glands
connective tissue projection; provides blood supply for hair matrix
secures nail to digit
epithelial layer that surrounds hair root
external root sheath
secretes sebum onto hair and skin
part of nail that is visible
part of nail that extends beyond digit
part of hair that contains the matrix
sudoriferous glands that deposit sweat onto epidermal ridges causing fingerprints
part of hair in epidermis and extending beyond skin surface
moves hair shaft perpendicular to skin; causes goose bumps
arrector pili muscle
thickened epithelial tissue at proximal end of nail body
crescent-shaped area of nail body near cuticle
part of nail within skin
part of nail deep to nail root that produces new cells, causing the nail to grow
What does the integumentary system consist of
Describe the function/purpose of the integumentary system
vitamin D synthesis,
temperature regulation (sweat/shiver),
detects cutaneous sensations
what are the sensory components of the skin
merkle (tactile cells),
free nerve endings,
meisseners corpuscles ,
where do you find the hair shaft vs. hair root?
hair root originates in the dermis or maybe hypo dermis.......then.....
hair shaft goes thru epidermis to outside of skin
list the layers of the hair shaft/root from inside to outside
then list the layers of the hair follicle from inside to outside
medulla, cortex, cuticle
follicle- internal root sheath, external root sheets, dermal root sheath
what produces the internal root sheath?
external root sheath? the dermal root sheath?
internal root sheath: hair matrix,
external root sheath: epidermis,
dermal root sheath: dermis
what does dense irregular tissue do for the skin? and what part of skin does it compose?
it composes the reticular layer of the dermis....
helps create tensile strength so skin can be pulled in many directions, allows skin to extend and go back to normal shape
what function does adipose tissue serve in the skin layer it is in? name the layer
adipose is found in the hypodermis.
stores energy and keeps a person warm
what is the function of eccrine sudoriferous gland?
excretes sweat which helps cool us off AND getS rid of waste
what is the function of sebaceous glands?
produce skin oil called sebum, keeps hair from drying out
describe the function of the dermal root sheath
the connective tissue of the dermis that forms the outermost layer of the hair follicle, protecting the layers below.
