Acetylcholine (Ach)
major role in PNS excitatory function (activating skeletal muscle), regulates some ANS functions, in CNS--involved in movement and attention
Dopamine (DA)
affects motor activity, cognition and behavior. Associated with feeling pleasure and reward
Endorphins
inhibit CNS neurons involved in perception of pain
Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)
major role CNS inhibitory functions (low level may lead to over-excitation which could cause seizures)
Glutamate (Glu)
Principal fast excitatory NT of the CNS; elicits neural changes associated with learning and development (high levels can be toxic)
Norepinephrine (NE)
Used by ANS, thalamus & hypothalamus; associated with attentive functions and the fight or flight response
Serotonin
Associated with mood and pain perception
Substance P
Involved in the perception of pain when tissue is injured
