Relief
The difference in elevation in between the highest and lowest part of an area.
Topographic map
Map that shows elevation, relief, and slope of an area.
Elevation
Height above sea level.
Profile
The side-view of a landform such as a mountain.
Contour line
A line on a topographic map that connects points of equal elevation.
Index contour line
A thick, bold contour line on a topographic map that has an exact elevation written on it.
Contour interval
Difference in elevation from one contour line to the next.
Benchmark
A surveyor's marker placed permanently in the ground as a known position and elevation.
Legend
Explains the symbols used on a map (key).
Slope
The angle or incline.
Scale
The ratio between the measured distance on a map to the actual distance in the real world.
Ridge
A narrow area of high land between two valleys.
Peak
The highest point of a mountain.
Base
The bottom of a mountain.
Intermittent Stream
Water flows in a stream only during certain times of the year.
