Location: superficial muscle of lateral & lower back
Origin: by aponeurosis to lower 3-4 ribs, inferior 6 thoracic &lumbar vertebrae. iliac crest
Insertion: intertubercular groover of anterior proximal humerus
Action: extends, adducts & medially rotates arm
Rectus Abdominis
Location: medial superficial muscle of abdominal region, underneath aponeurosis
Origin: pubic crest & symphysis
Insertion: xiphisternum & costal cartilages of ribs 5-7
Action: flexes vertebral column; depresses ribs; stabilizes pelvis
External Oblique
Location: superficial lateral abdomen (fibers run down from lateral-medial); ensheathed in aponeurosis
Origin: anterior aspet of ribs 5-12
Insertion: linea alba, pubis, & iliac crest
Action: flexes vertebral column; depresses ribs; rotates & laterally flexes trunk
Internal Oblique
Location: deep to external oblique; fibers run at right angels to those of the external oblique
Origin: lumbodorsal fascia, iliac crest & ingunal ligament
Insertion: linea alba, pubic crest, cartilages of last 3 ribs
Action: flexes vertebral column, depresses ribs; rotates and laterally flexes trunk
Transversus Abdominis
Location: deep to internal oblique; fibers run horizontally
Origin: inguinal ligament, iliac crest, cartilages of last 5 ribs

Action: compresses abdomen
