Affective disorders
Depression: slowe mental and physical activity; poor self esteem; immobilized from everyday activities.
Mania: disagreement with pt may produce pt aggression; disorganized thoughts and speech; constant activity
Bipolar: alternates between depression and mania; Females at greater risk; in 20's
Neuroses disorders
OCD: obsessions: persistent thoughts that will not leave; compulsions: repetitive ritual behavior that pt can't stop; begins in young adulthood
Anxiety disorder: constant high tension. over reacts, acute attacks
Phobia: excessive fear of objects, occurrences or situations; fear creates difficulty in everyday life
- agoraphobia, social phobia, simple phobia
Dissociative disorders
Psychogenic Amnesia: produced by mind with no physical cause; forgets all aspects of the past
Multiple personalities: rare dissociative disorder; includes two or more indep personalities; each personality may not know about the other
Somatoform disorders
Somatization disorder: WOMEN, chronic and long lasting, c/o symptoms with no physiological basis
conversion disorder: physical complaints of neurological basis with no underlying cause
- paralysis most common finding, (or deafness, blindness, paresthesia)
Hypochondriasis: excessive fear of illness
Schizophrenia disorder
Catatonic schizophrenia: motor disturbances with rigid posturing; uncontrolled motions, remain aware during episodes
Paranoid schizophrenia: Delusions of Gradeur, delusions of persecution; may believe they possess special powers
Disorganized schizophrenia: progressive and irreversible with inappropriate emotional responses; mumbled
Personality disorders
Psychopathic personality: low morality, poor sense of responsibility , no respect for others; expert liar; impulsive behavior for immediate gratification
Antisocial; results from particular cause; blames other institutions; symptoms before 16 y.o.
Narcissitic behavior: incapable of loving others; self-absorbed; unrealistic perception
Borderline behavior: instability in all aspects of life
- uses projection, denial, defensiveness, unpredictable mood or behavior
