Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) and Health Care Directives

No Chest Compressions, no defib, no assisted ventilations, no basic airway adjuncts, no advance airway, no cardiotonic medications or any other medications intended to initiate a heartbeat.

health care agent- person granted authority to act
DNR Directives
-Approved state Cal EMSA DNR or equivalent
-Medic Alert Medallion or Bracelet with engraved direction
-DNR order written by a physician for patient on hospice
Verbal Request of DNR
May Accept under following circumstances:
-A licensed patients physician present with the patient gives verbal DNR.
:Physician should write the DNR order within the PCR and sign the order
:MD name, address, phone #, Med license number
-DNR is communicated by "attorney-in-fact or "health care agent"
:Should sing PCR as the "attorney in fact"
-Immediate family present at scene
:Name of immediate family and sign ePCR.
BHC shall be contacted if?
-If there are any question regarding validity of DNR
-DNR is incomplete
-Document other than those listed in this policy
-Concern regarding immediate family
-Disagreement among family
-EMS personnel have concerns or require assistance
Guidelines for honoring a DNR?
-DNR patients shall receive non-resuscitation supportive care and other comfort measures
-DNR directive shall be disregarded if the patient requests resuscitative measures
- EMS shall honor DNR when patient requests
-DNR patient in Cardiac Arrest shall not be transported: contact PD/Corner
-DNR patients who decline transport
What if DNR patient is transported?
-DNR directive shall be honored during transport
-DNR will accompany the patient
-Attorney in law will go to hospital
