Acute Angle
A positive angle measuring less than 90 degrees.
Area
The number of square units that covers a shape or figure. (ex. The space a rug covers)
Congruent
Angles or figures that have the same size and shape.
Dividend
the number that is to be divided in a division problem
Divisor
the number that divides the dividend in a division problem
Estimate
a number that is close to an exact amount; commonly used to check a solution
Expression
a mathematical phrase or a number sentence that combines numbers, operations, signs, and or variables but does not contain an equal sign
Intersecting Lines
straight lines that cross at a point
Inverse Operations
The operation that reverses the effect of another operation. Example: Addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
Line
Straight line that extends in both directions with no end.
Lines of Symmetry
is the imaginary line where you could fold the image and have both halves match exactly.
Mixed Number
a number represented by a whole number and a fraction (ex. 1 ½)
Obtuse Angle
A positive angle measuring more than 90 degrees
Perimeter
The distance around the outside of a polygon (ex. The length of a fence)
Perpendicular Lines
A line is perpendicular to another if they meet at a right angle (90 degrees)
Point
A precise location or place on a plane. Usually represented by a dot.
Prime Number
A number that has exactly 2 factors: 1 and itself (the opposite of a composite number)
Protractor
A tool for measuring angles 0-180 degrees
Quotient
the answer to a division problem, not including a remainder
Ray
part of a line, with one endpoint, and extending to infinity in one direction.
Remainder
The amount left over when a number cannot be divided evenly
Right Angle
A positive angle measuring exactly 90 degrees
Simplest Form
A fraction in which the only number that can go evenly into the numerator and denominator is 1.
Vertex
(plural: vertices) is a point where two or more straight lines meet.
Volume
the measure of the amount of space inside of a solid figure, like a cube
