1. Popular Sovereignty
The authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of the people. (Gov't power comes from the people)
2. Limited Government
A political system where the government's power is limited by a written set of rules. The US constitution is an example of this.
3. Separation of Powers
Division of Gov't power where each branch has its own unique responsibilities
4. Checks and Balances
Ability of one or two branches of government to prevent actions of another branch. Helps to prevent an abuse of power.
5. Judicial Review
The supreme court's "check" on the legislative branch. If the supreme court declares a law unconstitutional the law is removed.
A division of power within a government. (Ex. Federal-state-local) Helps protects rights.

8. Appointment (Presidential)
The right of the President to choose high ranking government officials with the "advice and consent" of the Senate.
9. War Powers Act
Legislative and Executive limits on each others' military actions that may result in conflict/war.
Congressional actions: Laws, Acts, Resolutions
A law that can be enforced based on the principles of, "what has always been done and excepted by law."
12. Executive Order
A rule or command issued by the President to the executive branch that has the power of law.
A preliminary or opening statement, an introduction. (We the people, of These United States of America, in order to form a more perfect Union...)
14. Supremacy (Federal)
Being superior or above others, more power. (Federal gov't has supremacy over state and local gov't)
15. Rule of Law
The legal principle that law shall govern the land, not arbitrary decisions (judgement calls) by those in charge.
16. Legislature (state)
Law-making bodies of each state.
A meeting of people to accomplish a specific task (ex: Ratifying Convention)
A supporter of a strong national government & the Constitution's passage.
A supporter of a limited national govt. and a powerful state gov't
A formal written accusation of wrongdoing or a crime by a office-holding public official (being put on trial ONLY)
21. Succession (Presidential)
Identifies who takes over the presidential office in the even the president is incapacitated, has resigned, is removed, or has died.
