Articles of Confederation
Approved by all 13 colonies in 1781. It solved the problems of land claims because it said that all the states share the land in the west because they all fought for it. However, many problems were traced to the AOC due to its weakness of power.
Land Ordinance of 1785
A system of dividing land and selling it. The land speculators first surveyed the land and divided it into perfect squares called townships. One section per township was used for a school. They were trying to get land into the hands of farmers.
Northwest Ordinance (1787)
Sought to address the government of the territories. Said that a state could be formed when there was more than 60,000 people and that residents elect members to a state legislature and send a delegate to Congress. Established religious freedom and no slavery in the northwest territory.
An armed mob of farmers sought to shut down the courts as a form of protest and to prevent the continued foreclosure of their farms and the collection of taxes led by Daniel Shay. This shows the danger that could come if they don't create a constitution that has a strong central government.
Called for a bicameral legislature with representation based on population and a lower house of Congress elected by the people, which in turn would elect members to an upper house. This proposition favored large states.
New Jersey Plan
Called for a unicameral legislature with each state receiving one vote, an executive with no veto power, and a judiciary that could arbitrate cases that had originated in state courts. This proposition favored small states.
Compromise of the New Jersey and Virginia Plan. For large state, representation by population in House of Representatives and for small states, they get equal representation in Senate.
The South wanted to count the slaves as people so they could have more representatives in the House, but the North said that's like counting horses. So, the compromise was that they would count them as three-fifths a person.
Mainly aristocratic, rich citizens from the coast and urban areas. Most were merchants, financiers, and shippers because Hamilton believed commerce and manufacturing would help the economy. They favored a strong central government to maintain peace and stability, and they had a loose interpretation of the constitution.
Support came mainly from backcountry and agricultural areas, debtors, and people philosophically opposed to a strong central government. They wanted protection of individual rights and state to have more power than the central government.
Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
Measure enacted by the Virginia legislature prohibiting state support for religious institutions and recognizing freedom of worship. Served as a model for the religion clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Willingness on the part of citizens to sacrifice personal self-interest for the public good. Deemed a necessary component of a successful republic
Ideal of family organization and female behavior after the American Revolution that stressed the role of women in guiding family members toward republican virtue. This made the women during the Republic feel like they were playing their part and still contributing.
