James Armistead

An African American slave who acted as a spy. He would pose as a runaway slave. He acted as an orderly and guide to the British. He would then get the information and pass it to General Lafayette.

George Washington

He was commissioned by the Continental Congress to lead the Continental Army. He worked hard to get resources at Valley Forge and was instrumental in the final victory at Yorktown.

Thomas Jefferson

He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He outlined the protection of one's unalienable rights, and he was strongly influenced by John Locke.

He was an influential delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He helped influence the Continental Congress to formally declare independence from Great Britain and he helped T.J. draft the Dec. of Independence. He was also significant in negotiated the peace treaty (Treat of Paris 1783) with the British after the war.

His essay, Common Sense, was widely read and influenced colonists to pursue independence

This person famously argued, "If [particular] care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to start a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation."

Wentworth Cheswell

Massachusetts Patriot, free African American...like Paul Revere, he made a midnight ride on horseback to warn local residents that the British were coming. He later fought heroically at Saratoga.

Marquis de Lafayette

French soldier who joined General Washington's staff and became a general in the Continental Army. He came to America at 19 and offered his services for free! He believed that the American cause represented the future of mankind!

Bernardo de Galvez

Spanish governor of Louisiana, had tons of supplies and ammunition shipped up the Mississippi River to American troops. He also raised an army to fight the British.

Polish born American Jewish businessman, wealthy, lent money to the Patriot cause
