Multi store model of memory
Terms in this set (23)
Information is detected by the sense organs and this information is then sent to the sensory register.
Short term memory
If the information within the sensory register is attended to then this information is then sent to the short term memory
Mostly unconscious however not always. The sensory register has to pay attention to different inputs that are entering it. If the attentional gate is closed then information will not get through however if the attentional gate is open then the information can pass through and can then be registered and eventually sent to the short term memory
Long term memory
If the information within the short term memory has been rehearsed it will be passed onto the long term memory however it hasn't been rehearsed then the information will not be transferred.
This is the process of going over information within the short term memory. If information within the short term memory has been rehearsed this information will then be transferred to the long term memory
Refers to how information is changed / coded from the form it arrives to the form is must be to be processed.
What are the three main types of encoding?
- visual encoding
- acoustic encoding
Decay of memory
If rehearsal of information within the short term memory doesn't occur and the information is not passed on to he long term memory then this information is forgotten through the displacement of memory or decay. (Slowly forgotten over time)
What is displacement of memory?
This is the process where information in the short term memory is pushed out by new incoming information as the STM only has a capacity of 7 +/- 2 items
This refers to how long information can stay in a certain stage of the multi store model of memory
This refers to the amount of information each store in the multi store model of memory can hold- I.e the short term memory has a capacity of +/- 2 items whereas the capacity of the long term memory is unlimited
What must happen to information for it to be transferred form a modality into a mental representation?
What is the duration of information within the sensory register?
1/4 to 1/2 of a second
What is the duration of information within the short term memory?
What is the duration of information within the long term memory?
Unlimited- information is categorised here and info permanently stays here until it is ready for retrieval.
What is the capacity of the sensory register?
All sensory modalities and experiences
What is the capacity of the short term memory?
7 items plus or minus two (idea devised by George Miller)
What is the capacity of the long term memory?
What are modalities?
The 5 senses are known as modalities and each of the modalities has a different input.
Which two people support the idea of the Multi store model of memory?
Why does Henry Molaison support the theory of the multi store model of memory?
He proved that for memory to function we need the hippocampus because he couldn't make new conscious memories. He was also able to show that he could learn new things which highlight that the long term memory and the short term memory are separate stores
Mode of representation:
Refers to the format in which info is stored, once we create a memory the info has to change its mode of representation
Evaluating the reductionism of the multi store model-
This model has been criticised for being over simplistic. Artificially breaking up the memory stores makes it easier to learn about memory however this model is being criticised for being reductionist.
