heart

a blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart
coronary artery
the first branches off the aorta that carry the blood to the heart itself

the way materials and wastes pass through capillary walls

the force blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels
plasma
the liquid part of blood

a cell that takes up oxygen in the lungs and deliver it to cells throughout the body
hemoglobin
a protein that contains iron and binds chemically to oxygen molecules

a disease-fighting blood cell

cell fragments that help form blood clots
lymphatic system
a network of veinlike vessels that return cells to the bloodstream
lymph
a fluid that consists of water and dissolved materials
lymph nodes
small knobs of tissue that filter lymph
atherosclerosis
a condition in which an artery wall thickens as a result of the buildup of fatty materials

when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked, causing cells to die
