Harrison is a war hero (General). He is advertised, much like Jackson as a common man (He was an aristocrat). There was a real emphasis on getting out the vote. Parties sponsored rallies, pig-Pickens, drinking, slogans, and buttons. It was an atmosphere very much like an NFL game today. The Whigs nominated John Tyler (of VA) as the VP candidate. Although Tyler was a Democrat (a disgruntled one), it was thought that he would garner a lot of southern support for Harrison.
-Harrison wins big
-William Henry Harrison was the oldest man elected President up to that time (68).
-Inauguration day was cold, windy, and rainy. Harrison gave the longest inaugural address in history (nearly 3 hours). He refused to wear a hat or coat, caught a cold and died of pneumonia one month later.
-Unbelievably, John Tyler, a Democrat was now President. The Whigs were aghast.
Henry Clay (leader of the Whigs) demanded that Tyler be a figurehead while Clay ran the country. Tyler refused.
