Earth's surface was somewhat like an inferno. The Earth underwent differentiation, the protoplanet collision that formed the Moon occurred. Much of earth's surface was an ocean of magma. There was also intense meteor bombardment at this time, which destroyed a lot of the Earth's crust, atmosphere, and ocean.
Ultimately, the conditions would be small, barren landmasses, spotted with volcanoes, poking up above an acidic sea. However, both land and sea was obscured by murky, dense, CO2 and So2 rich air.
