Writing From Faith - History of JBU
Terms in this set (5)
Why did John E. Brown rename his college, Southwestern Collegiate Institute, to John E. Brown College in 1920?
John E. Brown needed funds for his college so he could keep it affordable, but he didn't want it to be associated with a particular denomination, so there was no church base to provide funds. Hoping to use his popularity as a traveling evangelist to obtain funds through his publications and campaigns, Brown renamed the college with his name to give it recognition.
What types of students did JBU attract in the first couple of decades?
Many young people from California were attracted to the college. Although the student body was primarily white, many international students began to come, until there were students from Asia, Africa, Central America, and South America. Missionary kids liked the college because it was affordable and Christian.
In the early years, how did JBU students manage to have fun despite the harsh rules?
Students could date with supervision. They could leave campus for day trips with permission, and enjoyed their outings. They also enjoyed intramurals and literary societies. They played hard despite their limited free time.
Why did JBU transition toward evangelicalism and away from fundamentalism in the 1940s and 50s?
New conservatives emerged in the 1940s that held the beliefs of the fundamentalists but were more moderate. John Brown, Sr.'s personal beliefs of moderate theology led JBU toward evangelicalism, even though he preferred strict behavioral rules.
How does JBU continue to implement the "Head, Heart, Hand" philosophy today?
JBU has improved the academic quality of its programs, core curriculum, professors, and honor societies. It mentors students spiritually through Christian professors, chapel, and outreach programs. It also has many solid programs that orient students toward professions through internships and senior projects.
