Law of Conservation of Mass
The mass of a substance always remains the same before and after a chemical/physical change.
Gas
Constantly moving atoms that are not always in contact with each other. They usually spread out to fill the entire container they are in. Also called "vapor".
Condensation
A gas physical change into a liquid that is caused by a removal of heat energy (removing heat = cooling)
Solid
A group of atoms that keep their shape, and do not move around with ease.
Liquid
A group of atoms that move freely, but always are contact with each other. They take on the shape of their container.
Atoms
The smallest unit of all matter and retains the properties of each element.
Physical Properties
Observable ways to describe matter using the 5 senses, such as color, and texture.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object. Measured with gram units.
Solution
A mixture (usually liquid) where all the particles are evenly spread out. Ex: sugar dissolving in a cup of tea.
Physical Change
Any change that alters the physical structure of a substance, without creating a different substance. Ex. wax melting, or mixing Kool Aid and water.
Closed System
A container that does not allow anything to escape.
Chemical Change
A change that results in a brand new substance. The change can be created by change in temp, color, new smell, etc. It can not be reversed.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Evaporation
A liquids physical change into a gas that is caused by an increase in heat energy.
Molecules
A group of two or more bonded atoms. They can be the same type of element or different (compound).

CHEMISTRY
Use the band model to describe differences among insulators, conductors, and semiconductors. Also use the band model to explain why each of the following increases the conductivity of a semiconductor. a. increasing the temperature b. irradiating with light c. adding an impurity. How do conductors and semiconductors differ as to the effect of temperature on electrical conductivity?
