Central Resource Theory
Attention theory...one central source of attention resources, where all activities requiring action complete.
Multiple Resource Theory
Attention theory...Several attention resource mechanisms, each related to a specific activity. Limited to how much info it can process simultaneously. Each pool is specific to a specific component of performing skills.
central pool of resources.
Amount of available attention can vary depending on conditions relating to the individual, the task, and the situation.
Kahnemann Model of Attention
central pool, flexible capacity (can vary depending on...) Allocation, arousal, attention demands, etc.
Determined by the activity being performed, and the allocation policy of the individual.
Attention demands of the task
Must evaluate the demands to see if you can do it simultaneously or not at all.
general state of excitability; can reduce attention availability if too high or too low.
How People allocate;
1) make sure one activity is completed
2) Allocate according to enduring dispositions (distractions)
3) allocate according to momentary intentions (specific intentions)
Involuntary attention (in allocating) (distractions)
Novel events (in the environment)
Meaningfulness of events (someone says your name across the room..will automatically look.)
Dual Task procedure
common measure for measuring attention. to determine to amount of attention required to perform an action. Assess the degree of interference caused by one task when your doing another task at the same time.
