Input

A value that is substituted for the independent variable (x) in a relation or function.

Output

The value that results from the substitution of a given input into an expression or function.

Function

An input-output relationship that has exactly one output for each input.

Domain

The set of x-coordinates of the set of points on a graph; the set of x-coordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The value that is the input in a function or relation.

Range

The y-coordinates of the set of points on a graph. Also, the y-coordinates of a given set of ordered pairs. The range is the output in a function or a relation.

Relation

A mapping or pairing of input values with output values.

Independent Variable

(X axis) The variable (input) that determines the dependent variable (output).

Dependent Variable

(Y Axis) The variable (output) that is determined by the independent variable (input).

Vertical Line Test

If you place a vertical line on a graph, you can tell whether it is a function. If the line intersects the graph at only one point, then the relationship is a function.

Discrete Domain

A set of input values that consists of only certain numbers in an interval. On a graph, do not draw a line connecting points.

Continuous Domain

A set of input values that consists of all numbers in an interval. On a graph, you could draw a line connecting points.
