- come from dermal papillae that lie on top of the ridges of dermis
- genetically determined
- enhance gripping ability

- deep in dermis where dermis folds
- secured to deeper structures at joints
- creases form because skin is unable to slide over the joint
- found on the hands, wrist, fingers, toes and the foot.

- externally invisible in skin
- form separations or less dense region between bundles of collagen
- surgeons try to cut along cleavage lines
