Sun
A star made of burning gases that produces heat and light. It is 93 million miles from Earth. Plants and animals need this to live.
Earth
The third planet from the sun. Also known as the blue planet because much of it is covered with water.
Rotate
It means to spin or twirl. The Earth spins all the way around once every 24 hours (1 day).
Atmosphere
This is the layer of gases that surround the earth or other planets.
Orbit
It means to travel in a circle-shaped path around a star, planet or moon. The Earth goes around the Sun every 365 days (1 year). The moon circles around the Earth about every 28 days.
Core
The very hot layer at the center of the earth made up mostly of metal.
Mantle
The middle layer of the earth
Crust
The layer of the earth that we live on.
Moon
A piece of rock that orbits around Earth.
Full Moon
The phase of the Moon when the Sun lights the side of the Moon that faces towards Earth. The Moon looks full.
New Moon
The phase of the Moon when the Sun lights the side of the Moon that faces away from Earth; the side of the Moon that faces Earth is dark.
Waxing and waning
The shape of the moon seems to be getting bigger or smaller.
