Terms in this set (18)
Cell membrane
A selectively permeable barrier that allows substances to move into the cell. Protects and supports a cell. Found in plant and animal cells
Cell wall
Rigid barrier that protects the plant cell. Found in a plant cell
Nucleus
Spherical or oval body containing the nucleolus and DNA. Control center of the cell.
Nucleolus
Place inside the nucleus where ribosomes are made.
Nuclear pore
Small holes on the nuclear membrane which allow for molecules and ribosomes to move into the nucleus and out into the cytoplasm
Chromosomes
Packaged DNA. Contains the genetic material to direct the activities in the cell
Cytosol
The liquid part of the cytoplasm
Cytoplasm
A thick gel-like material containing organelles found between the cell membrane and nuclear membrane
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell. Converts food molecules into cell energy.
Lysosome
Small organelles that contain chemical enzymes that break down food particles and worn out cell parts.
Golgi Complex
Receive, package and distribute proteins made by the ribosomes in the cell. The FedEx of the cell.
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis in the cell
Microtubules
Small tubes that serve as part of the cytoskeleton of the cell
Microfilaments
Small fiber involved with cell movement and structure in the cell.
Chloroplasts
Captures sunlight energy and makes food (glucose) for the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Passageways that carry proteins from one part of a cell to another
Vacuoles
Found more in plant cells than animal cells - These are storage areas in the cell. Stores mainly water
Centrioles
"Sets of microtubules involved in cell reproduction.
Serve as anchor points for the spindle fibers during cell division"
