Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Terms in this set (15)
Where do all organisms get their energy?
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants turn sunlight and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar) and create the waste product oxygen.
What are the chemicals used in the process of photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide: CO2
Why are chloroplasts essential to photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts make chlorophyll, which turns plant leaves green and collects the sunlight
What parts of the plant collect the materials for photosynthesis?
The roots collect water and the stomata of the leaves collect Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
Identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis.
Reactants: water and Carbon Dioxide - CO2
Products: Glucose and Oxygen
Describe the two stages of photosynthesis.
Stage 1: Collection of raw materials (sunlight energy, water, carbon dioxide). Step 1 is called the light dependent reactions.
Stage 2: Processing of the raw materials to form glucose and oxygen. This step is called the Calvin Cycle, which is also known as the light independent or dark reactions.
What is the Calvin Cycle?
The Calvin Cycle occurs when the molecules of carbon dioxide and water are taken apart, rearranged and recombined using the energy in sunlight to make glucose and oxygen.
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + water +sunlight+ Glucose + Oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O+sunlight + C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is cellular respiration?
A process where cells turn oxygen and food into water and carbon dioxide
Where does cellular respiration take place?
mitochondria and cytoplasm.
Identify the reactants and products of cellular respiration.
The reactants: glucose and oxygen
The products: carbon dioxide and water
Where do animals get the reactants?
Oxygen - air we breathe
Glucose - food we eat
The formula for cellular respreation
Oxygen + Glucose → carbon dioxide+ water + energy
How are cellular respiration and photosynthesis related?
They are opposite process:
products of photosynthesis are reactants of Cellular Respiration.
Products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis
