Mendel's Pea Plant Experiments- Science
Terms in this set (15)
Who is Mendel?
1851, Gregor Mendel referred to as the father of genetics.
Mendel studied how traits are passed along to offspring. He used pea plants for 2 main factors:
- Easy to grow and produce a large amount of offspring.
- Self pollinate/Mendel could also cross pollinate.
Mendel wanted to investigate the inheritance of traits. What did he cross?
He crossed tall plants with short plants to see what offspring they produced.
What did Mendel do to prove purebred plants?
He let the plants only self pollinate and collected the data for generations of pea plants.
What is P1 generation?
The parent generation
What is F1 generation
Filial "means son" in latin. They are the offspring of the "P" generation.
What was Mendel's first experiment?
Crossed a tall purebred plant and a short purebred. Results- F1 produced all tall plants.
What was Mendel's second experiment?
F plants were allowed to self pollinate. Results- F2 generation were a mix of tall and short.
What other traits did Mendel study in peas?
-Seed coat color
What did Mendel reason?
That factors (genes) that control traits come in pairs. One from the female and one from the male. One factor can hide or mask another factor. Ex. tallness masks shortness in the F1 generation.
What is recessive in pea plants?
In pea plants, tallness is dominant and shortness is recessive.
What is recessive in humans?
In humans, brown hair is dominant and blonde is recessive.
What were Mendel's pea plants?
P generation- Tall purebred has 2 tall alleles. Short purebred has 2 short alleles.
F1 generation- All tall offspring (dominant masked the recessive trait for shortness)--- 1 tall allele and 1 short allele (hybrids)
Standard shorthand method for traits
Dominant- capital letter Tall (T)
Recessive- lower case letter short (t)
Purebred- tall TT short tt
Hybrid- tall Tt
What happened to Mendel's work?
It was forgotten for 34 years. In 1900 his work finally received the recognition it deserved.
