Mr. Van Daan has his wife's coat sold, and a worker becomes suspicious about the bookcase. Additionally, Mr. Kraler goes to the hospital and there is a food shortage.
Summarize Act II Scene II.
Anne and Peters relationship has grown exponentially, and Anne visits Peter in his room daily. Mrs. Van Daan believes that the children like each other when Anne is affectionate with her after Peter kisses Anne.
Summarize Act II Scene III.
Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing food by Mrs. Frank, who demands that the Van Daans be put out. Mr. Dussel is dividing food rations when Miep comes with great news, the invasion by allied troops into France has begun.
Summarize Act II Scene IV.
A phone is ringing downstairs, and Mr. Dussel is insistent that it is Miep trying to warn them of something. Anne and Peter are in Peter's room when cars pull up to the building. The people in the annex have been captured by the Nazis.
Summarize Act II Scene V.
The reader is now back in the present where Mr. Frank has finished reading Anne's diary. It is explained that Mr. Frank went to Auschwitz, while his family went to Bergen Belsen. We learn that everyone in the annex sans Mr. Frank died. The play ends with Mr. Frank saying of Anne, "She puts me to shame."
How does the relationship between Anne and Peter change during Act II?
Anne and Peter become far closer during Act II. They rely on each other for support as the two youngest members of the Annex.

Anne was witness to Miep, Mr. Kraler and her father taking people into their hearts during a difficult time, at the risk of their own lives. Anne had great examples that led her to believe that people are intrinscally good.
Explain what Mr. Frank might mean by his last line: "She puts me to shame."
Anne confessed in her diary that she believed "in spite of everything,... people are really good at heart." Mr. Frank does not believe this about people, and he is put to shame by his daughter's innocence and trust in others. He feels that Anne is better than him, as she is able to do these things.
Explain the euphemism of the Van Daan's "discussions".
The Van Daan's "discussions" are really heated arguments. Calling them "discussions" downplays their severity.
How does the play demonstrate dramatic irony?
Throughout the story, the reader is aware that all of those in the annex, except Mr. Frank, will die. Also, Anne wants to be a writer, and be remembered after her death. The reader understands that both of these will happen, although Anne does not.
