Terms in this set (29)
Circle
The set of all points in a plane equidistant from a given point.
Radius (Radii)
Segment between the center of a circle and a point on the circle.
Center
The point from which all points of the circle are equidistant.
Chord
An interior segment whose endpoints are on the circle.
Tangent
A line that intersects the circle at exactly one point.
Secant
A line that intersects a circle at two points on the circle.
Diameter
A segment between two points on a circle, which passes through the center of the circle (longest chord).
Arc
Unbroken part of a circle
Minor Arc
Part of a circle measuring less than 180 degrees
Major Arc
Part of a circle measuring between 180 and 360 degrees
Congruent Arc
Two arcs that have the same measure and are of the same circle or of congruent circles.
Adjacent Arc
Arcs of the same circle that intersect at exactly one point.
Intercepted Arc
Arc encased in a central or inscribed angle.
Radian
Unit of measure for an angle based on relationship of the radius and arc length of the central in a circle
Semicircle
Arc with endpoints that are the endpoints of a diameter. Arc is 180 degrees.
Sector of a Circle
Region bounded by two radii of the circle and their intercepted arc.
Segment of a Circle
Region bounded by an arc and its chord
Central Angle
Angle whose vertex is the center of the circle.
Inscribed Angle
Angle whose vertex is on a circle and whose sides contain the chords of a circle
Interior Angle
Angle inside of a circle
Exterior Angle
Angle outside of a circle
Circumscribed Angle
Angle whose rays are tangent to the circle
Subtended Angle
Angle formed by an object at a given external point
Congruent Circles
Two circles that have the same radius
Tangent Circles
Circles that intersect at exactly one point
Common Tangent
A line that is tangent to 2 circles
Point of Tangency
Point where the tangent and a circle intersect
Concentric circles
Co-planer circles with the same center
Circumference
The distance around the edge of the circle.
