allusion
an indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
antagonist
a principal character or force in opposition to a protagonist, or main character; is usually another character but sometimes can be a force of nature, a set of circumstances, some aspect of society, or a force within the protagonist
characterization
the way a writer creates and develops character's personalities; is either direct or indirect
conflict
a struggle between opposing forces; can be internal or external
foreshadowing
is a writer's use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the story
imagery
consists of descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader
irony
a special kind of contrast between appearance and reality-usually one in which reality is the opposite of what it seems
mood
