Terms in this set (23)
what are the building blocks of all living things?
a living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently
scientific two part name
bionomial nomanclature. a latin/greek term that describes something.
the scientific study of how living things are classified
levels of the classification system
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
difference between a unicellular organism and a multicellular organism
unicellular means made from one cell. multi cellular is made from many cells
what are the main characteristics of an insect?
4 wings, exosceloton, thlrax, abdoman, 6 legs
growing by adding new segments, the ability to regrow a missing part of the body
a means of asexual reproduction whereby a single parent breaks into parts that regenerate into whole new individuals
a hard outer covering that supports and protects some animals without backbones
hydras method of asexual reproduction
how douse the hydra obtain food
by starilyizing its food
functions of organelles
Nucleus = controls processes that happen in the cell (contains DNA)
Cytoplasm = holds cell together
Cell membrane = controls what comes in and out
Cell Wall = acts as a backbone for the plant
Chloroplast = contains chlorophyll for photosynthesis
Vacuole = contains cell sap, stores food and stop the cell dehydrating
mitochondria= powerhouse, makes the energy
purpose of dna
Contains instructions for making proteins
structure of dna
twisted ladder double helix, wi two base pairs a-t c-g
dna stands for
difference between animal and plant cell
plant cells have a cell wall chlorplast, bigger vacuoles and only 1 or two vacuoles. animal cells have many vacuoles and do not contain cell wall or chlorplast, Plant cell has to make a cell plate in the middle of the cell because it can not squeeze together, plant cell is square, animal cell is round.
how did the elodia look different when it was stored in salt water why?
it shrunk, the salt pushed the cell membrane in
diffusion and osmosis
The process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration; osmosis - the diffusion of water across the plasma membrane
general term that means some substances, but not others, can pass through the plasma membrane.
steps of cell division
1.Cell copies its DNA, turning it into strands called chromatin.
2. Mitosis begins, and the cell membrane dissolves. Pairs of chromosomes line up at the center of the cell, then the chromosomes separate, moving to opposite ends of the cell. Chromosomes uncoil and become chromatin and a new membrane forms around each nucleus.
3. Cytoplasm divides. In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches inward to form two new cells. In plant cells, a new cell wall divides one plant cell into two.
result of cell division
two identical daughter cells
how is cell division different from plants versus animal cells
in plant cells the plate seperates it.
