The Heart Ch 20 (I)

STUDY
PLAY
ANGINA PECTORIS
CONDITION DUE TO CORONARY HEART DISEASE RESULTING IN CHEST PAIN OR DISCOMFORT WHEN HEART DOESN'T GET AS MUCH BLOOD & OXYGEN AS IT NEEDS. OCCURS IF STRESSED OR DURING HIGH ACTIVITY.
CARDIAC ISCHEMIA (EE-SKEE-ME-UH)
LACK OF BLOOD FLOW AND OXYGEN TO HEART MUSCLE
BALLOON ANGIOPLASTY
TECHNIQUE THAT OPENS NARROWED ARTERIES BY USING A LONG, THIN TUBE CALLED A CATHETER THAT HAS A SMALL BALLOON ON TIP. THE BALLOON INFLATES AT THE BLOCKAGE SITE IN THE ARTERY TO FLATTEN OR COMPRESS THE PLAQUE AGAINST THE ARTERY WALL.
BRADYCARDIA
ABNORMALLY SLOW HEART RATE OF LESS THAN 60 BEATS PER MINUTE.
CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS
PREVENT CALCIUM FROM ENTERING CELLS OF THE HEART AND BLOOD VESSELS RESULTING IN LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE. THEY RELAX & WIDEN BLOOD VESSELS BY AFFECTING THE MUSCLE CELLS IN THE ARTERIAL WALL.
CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIAS
CONDITION IN WHICH THERE IS ABNORMAL ELECTRIC ACTIVITY IN THE HEART. THE HEART BEAT MAY BE TOO FAST, TOO SLOW, REGULAR OR IRREGULAR.
CARDIAC TAMPONADE
CONDITION IN WHICH FLUID COLLECTS IN THE PERICARDIAL SAC PREVENTING VENTRICLES FROM FULLY EXPANDING THUS THEY CANNOT FILL ENOUGH OR PUMP BLOOD.
CARDITIS (CAR-DIE-TIS)
INFLAMMATION OF THE HEART.
CONDUCTIN DEFICIT
ABNORMALITLY IN THE ELECTRICAL PATHWAYS THAT AFFECT THE TIMING AND PACING OF CARDIAC CONTRACTIONS.
CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS GRAFT (CABG)
OPERATION WHERE BLOOD FLOW IS REROUTED THRU A NEW ARTERY OR VEIN THAT IS GRAFTED AROUND DISEASED SECTIONS OF CORONARY ARTERY TO INCREASE BLOOD FLOW TO HEART MUSCLE TISSUE.
CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (CAD)
CONDITION IN WHICH PLAQUE BUILDS UP INSIDE CORONARY ARTERIES. THESE ARTERIES SUPPLY HEART WITH OXYGEN-RICH BLOOD. PLAQUE NARROWS THE ARTERIES & REDUCES BLOOD FLOW TO HEART, MAKES IT MORE LIKELY THAT BLOOD CLOTS WILL FORM CAUSING BLOCK BLOOD FLOW.
CORONARY ISCHEMIA (EE-SKEE-ME-UH)
NOT HAVING ENOUGH BLOOD THROUGH THE CORONARY ARTERIES
CORONARY THOMBOSIS
BLOCKAGE DUE TO THE FORMATION OF CLOT (THROMBUS) ON PLAQUE IN A CORONARY ARTERY.
ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG/EKG)
A RECORDING OF THE ELECTRICAL ACTIVITIES OF THE HEART OVER TIME.
HEART FAILURE
PUMPING ACTION GROWS WEAKER & PERIPHERAL TISSUES SUFFER FROM OXYGEN & NUTRIENT DEPRIVATION.
HEART MURMUR
ABNORMAL HEARTBEAT DUE TO DEFECTIVE HEART VALVES THUS LEADING TO REGURGITATION.
MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE
BULDGING OF ONE OR BOTH OF THE BICUSPID LEAFLETS INTO THE LEFT ATRIUM DURING HEART CONTRACTION.
MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (MI)
A.K.A. HEART ATTACK DEATH OF HEART MUSCLE BY BLOCKAGE OF CORONARY ARTERY BY BLOOD CLOT.
PERICARDITIS
INFLAMMATION OF THE PERICARDIUM.
RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE (RHD)
DISORDER WHERE HEART VALVES BECOME THICKENED & STIFFEN IN A PARTIALLY CLOSED POSITION AFFECTING HEART EFFICIENCY. CAUSED BY RHEUMATIC FEVER I.E. STREP THROAT.
TACHYCARDIA
ABNORMALLY FAST HEART RATE OVER 100 BEATS PER MINUTE.
VALVULAR HEART DISEASE (VHD)
OCCURS WHEN THE HEART'S VALVES DO NOT WORK THEY WAY THEY SHOULD.
