Civil Rights disillusionment
some WOMEN begin the civil rights movement because they're not being treated the same. They need to separate in order to advocate for THEIR issues

Betty Friedan
Co-founder of NOW (National Orginization of Woman), was an investigative journalist, wrote "The Feminine Mystique," an account of HOUSEWIVES lives in which they suboordinated their own aspirations to the needs of men; bestseller was an inspiration for many women to join the women's rights movement
"The Feminine Mystique" 1963
written by Betty Friedan, journalist and mother of three children; described the problems of middle-class American women and the fact that women were being denied equality with men; said that women were kept from reaching their full human capacities
"Containment of Women"
lower class women do not understand this and think these women's problems are small compared to theirs. They do not get to stay home, they have to work many hours of the day to support their families
1960's counter culture
A variety of cultural movements against the norms of society. While Yippies were the political activists , Hippies were the activists of another kind. they focused on culture, not politics. They wanted to change the accepted mainstream society. sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Summer of Love, LSD was legal till 1968
The Pill, 1960
Margaret Sanger creates the pill, not widely available, couldn't get it if your doctor didn't approve. However, women finally have control over their body

Sexual/Gender Equality
identifying the fact that women get paid less, less social security, only man was getting social security. so if you weren't married, you get nothing. women could get fired if they got pregnant :/

ERA: Equal Rights Amendment, 1972
"Equal rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the U.S. or any state on the account of sex" - Alice Paul, 1923. Finally passes in 1972. Now needs to be ratified
Roe v. Wade, 1973
established national abortion guidelines; trimester guidelines; no state interference in 1st; state may regulate to protect health of mother in 2nd; state may regulate to protect health or unborn child in 3rd. inferred from right of PRIVACY established in Griswald v. Connecticut
