Alcohol
A substance also called ethanol, found in drinks like beer, wine, and liquor, that can make a person drunk. Drinking alcohol is illegal and dangerous for anyone under the age of 21.
Neuroscience
The study of the brain and nervous system.
Neurotransmitter
A chemical substance that carries a message from one neuron to another.
Nervous System
A system in your body that is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. This system
sends messages between the brain and other parts of your body that are responsible for
controlling movement and feeling.
Neuron
A nerve cell; a special cell that carries messages between the brain and other parts of the body.
Excitatory Neurotransmitter
A neurotransmitter that stimulates brain activity; makes brain functions more active.
Inhibitory Neurotransmitter
A neurotransmitter that slows down brain activity.
Agonist
A chemical substance that can boost the effects of other chemicals in the brain.
Antagonist
A chemical substance that reduces the effects of other chemicals in the brain.
Central Nervous System
The central nervous system is made up of your brain and spinal cord. The brain sends information to different parts of your body through the spinal cord, via neurotransmitters.
Spinal Cord
The main path for information, connecting the brain with other parts of the body. The spinal cord is made up of nerve fibers that run through the spine.
Impaired
Damaged or weakened.
Reaction Time
The amount of time is takes to respond to something.
Cerebellum
The part of the brain that sits at the back of the skull, right above the brainstem. It controls balance and movement, and even the way you speak!
Coordination
The ability to move different parts of your body in a smooth and easy manner.
Motor Skills
Our abilities to control our movements, both physical
and verbal.
Cerebral Cortex
The wrinkly, outer-layer of a large portion of the brain, divided into sections called lobes. It allows you to use your
five senses, control your body, make decisions, and more!
Enable
To make something possible or easy; to make someone or something able to do something.
Perceive
To become aware of something, usually through your senses.
React
To change in response to something.
Hippocampus
Part of the brain that is thought to be the center of emotion and memory.
Limbic System
A complex system of nerves and networks in the brain.
Memory
The power or process of remembering what has happened or what has been learned.
Retrieval
The Process of getting something back that was stored elsewhere.
Endocrine System
This body system is in charge of slower body processes, like cell growth. Made up of glands and hormones.
Pituitary
The major endocrine gland attached to the base of the brain. Controls growth, development, and functions of other glands.
