Klemens Von Metternich
Austrian Foreign Minister, the most influential conservative diplomat of the early nineteenth century. He believe revolution was like a sickness like a plague or cancer. Believing in this, his allies and him went off to Europe to cure them.
What were Metternich's primary goals?
To bolster the legitimacy of monarchies and, after the defeat of Napoleon, to promote a balance of power that would prevent another large-scale war in Europe.
Congress of Vienna
International conference to reorganize Europe after the downfall of Napoleon and the French Revolution. European monarchies restored the Bourbon family to the French throne, and agreed to respect each other's borders and to cooperate in guarding against future revolutions and wars.
Alexander I
Presented himself during the Napoleonic wars as the "liberator" of Europe, and many feared that he would substitute an all-powerful Russia for an all-powerful France. Kingdom of Poland placed under his control.

Holy alliance
Holy alliance
dedicated to justice, Christian charity, and peace. The British foreign minister was skeptical about it and described it as a piece of sublime mysticism and nonsense. However he agreed that the European powers should defend their conception of authority, centered on the legitimacy of dynastic kingship.
Louis XVIII
The Congress of Vienna recognized Louis XVIII as the legitimate sovereign of France and confirmed the restoration of Bourbon rulers in Spain and Two Sicilies. He was a bulwark against revolution. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna returned a bourbon monarch to the throne. He claimed absolute power. In 1824, Louis XVIII was succeeded by his far more conservative brother, Charles X (r. 1824-30).
Louis conceded some important rights:
legal equality, careers open to talent, and a two-chamber parliamentary government.
Concert of Europe
Series of diplomatic agreements, designed primarily by Austrian minister Klemens Von Metternich between 1814 and 1848 and supported by other European powers until 1914, to maintain a balance of power on the Continent and to prevent destabilizing social and political change in Europe.
