STUDY
PLAY
axis of symmetry
a fold or line that divides a parabola into two matching halves x = -b/2a
maximum
the y-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens downward
minimum
the y-coordinate of the vertex of a parabola that opens upward
parabola
the graph of a quadratic function; a U-shaped curve that opens up or down
quadratic function
a function that can be written in the form y=ax^2+bx+c, where a does not equal zero.
standard form of a quadratic function
a quadratic function written y=ax^2+bx+c, where the degrees(exponent value) decrease from left to right.
vertex
the highest or lowest point on a parabola; the axis of symmetry intersects the parabola at the vertex
zero-product property
for every real number a and b, if ab=0, then a=0 or b=0.
discrimant
the quanity b^2-4ac - its value can be used to determine the number of soluctions of a quadratic equation.
quadratic formula
x= negative b, plus or minus the square root of b squared minus 4ac, divided by 2a.
initial height
the c-value in a quadratic function (the constant)
initial velocity
the b-value in a quadratic function (coefficient of x)
solution
where the parabola crosses the x- axis also called x-intercepts or zeros
