Cell
A membrane covered structure that has all of the materials necessary for life. (basic unit of life)
Connective Tissue
The tissue whose functions include support, protection, insulation, and nourishment. (also joins and cushions organs)
Dehydration
The condition that results from excessive loss of body water.
Dermis
The bottom, deeper, layer of skin, it is the thicker of the two layers and has many fibers made of collagen in it (makes the skin strong and flexible) and also contains many other structures like nerves, blood vessels, hair follicles, muscle fibers, oil glands & sweat glands.
Epidermis
The top layer of skin, it is the thinner of the two layers and is made of epithelial tissue and keratin (a protein that helps make skin tough).
Epithelial Tissue
The tissue that covers and protects underlying tissue.
External Stimulus
Something outside the body that causes the animal to react.
Excrete
To discharge non-useful material from the system (of an organism).
Homeostasis
The ability of an organism (or cell) to seek and keep a condition of stability within its internal environment when dealing with external changes.
Integumentary System
A collection of organs whose primary function is to help the body maintain a stable and healthy internal environment (homeostasis). The system composed of the skin, hair, and nails.
Internal Stimulus
Something inside of an animal's body that causes the animal to react.
Melanin
A darkening chemical in the skin and hair that determines its color.
Muscle Tissue
The tissue made of cells that can contract and relax to produce movement.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue that sends electrical signals throughout the body.
Perspiration
Sweating, the functional secretion of sweat.
