1a) What is the Grand Canal?
It is a waterway that linked the Huang River and the Chang River. Many workers took part in the construction of the canal. It helped join northern and southern China. And this made it possible to supply the capital in the south with large amount of grain growth.

This was important because it helped joined the north and south of China. Also, it supplied grain to the capital. This helped them trade.

1. Now they hired people based on their abilities and not their wealth or social position. This is better, just because you wealthy does not mean you are able to do a lot. This puts people where they belong. The merit system is a system of hiring people based on their abilities.

By forging the empire. Their military became strong by fighting on horseback. They also used smart military strategies. Genghis Khan was their commander. Their military was very strong and had smart strategies.
3b) Why do you think the Mongols did not adopt Chinese customs?
Since, they kept forging the empire, they wanted their customs to expand. They did not force some of Chinese's customs, the ones that they adopted. They used other place's ideas. 'Yuan' met new and they wanted a new beginning.
#1: How were government positions filled in imperial China?
Government positions in imperial China were filled. Before, their government was in a form of a dynasty, a series of rulers from the same family. How does this work? To start of the dynasty usually a grandfather or father could rule. For example, if the grandfather started the dynasty, then if he died, next in line would be the son. After that it would keep going down the family line. The family had to be blood related in order to rule. This was controlled by a family-men bloodline. This caused a corruption because sometimes the ruler did not have even ability, skill, and responsibility to be in charge. Then the Tang dynasty started the merit system. The Song expanded the merit system. Sometimes someone's wealth gt them a government position. Throughout, the merit system was fair, successful, adjust, and more smoothly run.

The contact with the outside world influenced Chinese cultures. With the outside world it allowed ideas to spread. The outside world, on the Silk Road might have had more ideas because a lot of different people traveled throughout it, daily. Some of the crops were brought into China because they were talked about on the outside world. Along with that, the Chinese witnessed people put lemon juice on their food and they wanted to preserve it. Then they brought in lemon juice. Some other examples are Persian carpets and tea. Along with that, this is how religions spread.

The improvements in agriculture and trade impacted China's development. Along the Silk Road, ideas spread. They traded crop ideas. The Chinese started to grow new crops because they learned it from other cultures. Other cultures informed the Chinese about these crops. This was an improvement because they ate more food. They also adapted to tea. Other places were drinking tea and they found out about it through trade. Also new strains of rice and better irrigation methods helped peasants grow more rice. This is important to the development of peasants because they produced more food and now they had a surplus. These two improvements let farmers to produce two crops a year instead of one. This meant they had a food surplus, so more people could follow other trades and pursue the arts. This was significant because now they had food in time of needs. They traded the grain through the canals.

Geography played a role in the development of the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties. Boundaries that kept them from spreading. The Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties had common features. Their common features were the Himalayas, the Gobi Desert, and the rivers. Some of the rivers were Huang He and Chang Jiang. These played a role in their development because these geographical features prevented the dynasties to spread. So, their dynasties developed in other locations and focused in small areas. They were boundaries and prevented them from civilizing in other locations. These geographical features were both positive and negative. They were negative because the dynasty could not spread in those locations. Along if they needed to grow crops they could not next to the Gobi and could not plant on the Himalayas. Even though they were negative, these were boundaries were positive. The common features kept out invaders. Also, the rivers helped them trade easier. All geographical features can be positive and negative.

The Tang Dynasty was considered the Golden Age of China. This dynasty was a Golden Age for art and literature. It was also known as the Golden Age of political and cultural achievement. The emperor of the dynasty granted equal amounts of land to each adult male. But, in return for taxes and he continued the trend of local government rule. The men thought this was very fair, so they did not have to fight for land and mostly everybody was happy. The only men that were upset were the people that had more money and thought they deserved better. Along with that, the Chinese created a smaller government which helped money because this enabled them to save food as a surplus in case of famine. This surplus could provide economic relief for the farmers in case of flooding or other disasters. They had military pressure. Their military pressure was strong. This dynasty also expanded their land and communicated with other places, such as Southwest Asia, Korea, Russia, and Europe. They brought in many cultures and beliefs, such as Buddhism. In addition, their capital was the world's largest at the time and was home to about one million people.

1. They all have a moral life and are understanding. Since they were all Buddhist, they could all pray and share religious ideas with each other.
2. The Tang was falling and Buddhism was used as a scapegoat. If some did not change to Buddhism yet, they might fight about who believes in what. Kublai Khan wanted Christianity.
