Social Capital
Amount of social characteristic that a community has.
Urban environment
Defined as the specific characteristics or features of cities/rural areas that influence health. Can be viewed as three distinct concepts:
- The social environment
- The physical environment and
- The resource infrastructure
The urban social environment
The collective norms and values shared by members with the interpersonal relationships and interactions shared among urban residents and communities.
- Can both harm and promote health
Social Norms
Patterns of behaviors that are considered accepted and expected by a given society.
Structural Social Capital
Refers to the quantity of social relationships
Cognitive social capital
Refers to the quality of those social relationships
Negative aspects from absence of social capital
Negative health outcomes such as increases in morality, poor self-rated perception of health, and higher crime rates and violence
The urban/rural environment
Specific characteristics or features of cities/rural areas that influence health.
Viewed as three distinct concepts:
- The social environment
- The physical environment
- The urban resource infrastructure
Psycho-social Processes
These processes involve interactions between social conditions and individual psychology and behavior.
- Psycho-social processes are associated with stress, depression, anxiety, isolation, insecurity, hostility and lack of control.
Direct Community-level Process
Basic resources (food, water, medications) need for maintenance of body functions
Indirect Community-level Process
Distribution of cost of these resources in the community are likely to have effect on social interactions and behaviors which may shape population health.
Community Factors
Population density, land use patterns, physical infrastructure systems (transportation and sanction) and buildings
Proximate Level Factors
Air and water quality, dust and noise level, local climate, pestilence, and physical safety and security
