-Guy Hawkins wants to whip him because he doesn't like his sister or him and he hates teachers
-Jesse fights Guy and brings him down but not without a fight
-Guy ends up with a bloody nose and mouth, Jesse cleans him up while he is unconscious
-His blood left a stain in the wood floor and it would always be there as a reminder of what happened
-When Guy wakes up he says that Jesse is a good fighter and for the first time calls him "Mr. Stuart"

He was a student of jesses. he had a photographic memory. he went on to win multiple scholastic awards. when Jesse left lands burgh high school budge followed him and then won more scholastic awards.

He was traveling back home through the snow to get books for his students and he got lost and almost froze on the mountain.
What was Stewart's view on recreation?
He enjoyed recreation. the students would have recess and if they were in the middle of a game he and it was time for them to go in he would let them finish it before making them go in.

What caused the attendance problem at Landsburgh?
The students were leaving school for lunch and then they weren't returning back to school.
How did Stuart get it solved?
He came up with a plan to have attendance be taken in homerooms before and after lunch. 3 tardies equaled an absence which would be a reduction in their grades. Teachers would also call the parents if a phone was available at the home.
What was Stuart's biggest problem as a superintendent?
Landsburgh school went to an independent school district, which meant they were by themselves, and the people from the one end of the district that were close to Landsburgh school were zoned to go there, but that left a very small amount of students to go to the county school. The county fought Landsburgh school to get those students that were suppose to go to the county school to go to the county school instead of Landsburg school. Landsburg school wanted the county school to pay for the students' tuition to go to the Landsburg School. The county school fought Landsburg school in a lawsuit and got the line moved and they didn't have to pay Landsburgh school.
How did he try to solve it?
They fought the lawsuits and won every one of the lawsuits against him and the county that the Landsburg school filed.
What were some of the other problems he later writes about?
Mooner Bentworth, who was a board member who caused a lot of problems, he went against everything Jesse Stuart had to say and all of his ideas to fix the county.
Arguing trustees, they didn't want certain teachers going back to teach at the schools again.
Bad John Bledsoe, he came in during a school event and he said some language that wasn't appropriate, and he was asked to leave, then he said that he would leave if he got his money back, but he never paid to get into the event that was going on that he interrupted. after he finally left, Jesse Stuart followed him outside and Jesse fought him and won.
Financial difficulties, everyone in the county went 5 months or 5 years without pay, and teachers didnt complain they continued to teach and then random people that did service for the schools would come and demand their payment.
What happened as a result of the fight at the operetta?
People began to respect the school and Jesse and started paying their admission to school events.
Why didn't Stuart marry Deane immediately?
They have known each other for forever and have talked about getting married but it wasn't ever the time to do so because they still lived with there parents, and did not make a good amount of income yet to support themselves.
What did a superintendent have to do in Greenwood County?
They had to visit all the schools in the county, and do the paperwork like transcripts.
Who were the Meyers, Eustance Pratt, and Toodle?
Meyers were teachers (Mr. Meyers was football coach)
Eustance Pratt was a student at the school, she ended up working with Jesse as his student aid

How did Stuart feel about adult education at Maxwell High School?
He supported it and thought it was beneficial to everyone.
Where was Stuart's last teaching job (the state)?
Big schools had diversity, but what did they lack?
-They lacked community. The teachers didn't know all the kids and the kids didn't know all the teachers or each other. Jesse says that school is more fun when you bond with others. He also says that you can grow up uniquely in a small school, but in a big school you have to fit into a mold.
Who was Enoch Arvin and how does he link with Jesse?
-He hits Jesse on the head when Jesse visits Landsburgh. They end up going to court, but Enoch Arvin gets off with only a fine of $200.
How did the book end?
Jesse gets into an academic challenge with a teacher named May Woods. It was like an academic team battle I guess you could say. May had him outnumbered with students, but Jesse had his taught better. Jesse managed to win with his last student named Margaret Prater. Jesse then moved away from Lonesome Valley to become something better than a teacher. He was a principal at Landsburgh High. His parents were very proud of him graduating from college and then later becoming a principal.
How is teaching today similar and different from that of Stuart's era?
Teachers looks for new ways to teach kids;
same basic classroom environment
Higher education/more knowledge and classes taught today (higher literacy and such).
