Computer Basics Vocabulary

machine that performs 4 basic functions: input, processing, storage, and output.
physical parts of the computer that you can see and touch.
the programs /applications on a computer. Examples include Microsoft Office, web browsers, or any other program/application installed on the computer.
processor/ CPU
The main body or brain of a computer. Consists of a plastic or metal enclosure, the motherboard (main circuit board), and hard disk/drives, power supply, cooling fans, and circuit boards plugged into the motherboard, such as a video/graphics card and USB ports.
input device
devices used to enter data into the computer; Examples: mouse, keyboard, scanner, microphone, digital camera
output device
devices used to put out data processed by the computer; Examples: monitor, printer, and speakers
storage device
hardware devices used for long term storage of files. Examples: hard drive, flash drive, CD ROM, or memory card
storing information temporarily or permanently, RAM: Random Access Memory. ROM: Read Only Memory. (measured in bits and bytes)
operating system
loads automatically and controls just about everything on your computer. Example: Microsoft Windows.
binary code
a coding system using the digits 0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit, or other character in a computer or other electronic device.
