Hurricanes are more destructive than tornados due to _______.
the combination of high winds and flood waters
Which of the following best explains why deforestation increases the risk of floods in an area?
Tree roots improve soil water retention.
Explain how human activities can intensify, or even cause a landslide.
Trees and other vegetation anchor soil in place and prevent rain and floodwaters from eroding too much of it. When humans clear this vegetation away, for the timber or development, this leaves the exposed ground in greater danger of landslides.
What type of cloud is Cloud C? What kind of weather might you expect when you see clouds of this type?
Cloud C is a cumulonimbus cloud. When these towering clouds fill the sky, a thunderstorm might be approaching.
A cold front often brings intense weather changes such as thunderstorms while a warm front often brings light rain or drizzle. Why is this the case?
In a warm front, the replacement of cold air by warm air is gradual while in a cold front, the cold air replaces warm air more quickly.
Give examples of three occupations in which weather forecasts are essential.
Farmers, airplane pilots, and space scientists all need accurate weather forecasts.
What information can you get from a station model?
A station model gives you the location of a weather station as well as the weather data collected at that station.
What is a barometer?
A barometer is an instrument used to measure air pressure.
Explain how the disposal of human waste could worsen the effects of hurricanes on coastal communities.
Coral reefs act as wave breaks and reduce the effects of storm surges from hurricanes by helping to absorb the impact of waves. When coral reefs die they are no longer as effective as wave breaks which worsens the impacts of storms for coastal communities. The disposal of human waste along coastlines and off of coasts can contribute to coral contamination and can lead to coral death, indirectly worsening the impact of hurricanes on coastal communities.
Scientists have created methods of controlling the weather such as seeding clouds to create rain. Explain why you think this is a good idea or not.
It is a good idea because it could help areas affected by droughts. Or it is not a good idea because changing the weather for the better in one place may have unexpected consequences of changing it negatively in other places or having negative effects on plant and animal life in the area.
What is the function of an anemometer?
An anemometer measures wind speed.
