Moro reflex
Sudden head movement on a vertical plane that is forward or backward will initiate the reflex
Reaction : rapid extension of the limbs, with a inhalation of breath, followed by contraction of the limbs and a cry.
Duration birth - 3-4 months
Reaction to danger - nerve/muscle stimulation with chemical release - adrenaline and cortisol
Retained Moro response: over sensitive, over reactive, "jump out of their skin reactions to minor situations
Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex
-Head is turned to left or right on a horizontal plane
-Triggered by labyrinth in the inner ear
-Extension of the limbs on the face side with flexion of the limbs on the head side.
-Fencer position
-Persistent ATNR will prevent development of crawling
-2wks-6mo
Galant Reflex
Cause hip rotation on the same side as stimulation of the small of the back.
Develop the range of movement needed for the hip
Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex
Reaction of the extremities and body caused by movement of the head.
TLR in flexion is responsible for fetal position
Closely linked to Moro reaction, to balance and to posture
Landau Reflex
Seen in horizontal suspension with the head, legs and spine in extended position
If the head is flexed , the hip, knees and elbows also flex
Appears at 3 months and disappears at 12-24 months
Absence of reflex occurs in hypotonia, hypertonia, motor weakness ,motor neuron disease and intellectual disability
Postural Reflexes
Automatic movements that control the equilibration required once upright and moving : combating the effects of gravity
Replaces the primitive reflexes
Mediated by the midbrain
Maintain posture, balance, and fluidity of movement
Develops between 6 and 10 months of age
-protecting self: use hands to keep from falling
Hand grasp time frame
B-4mo
Crossed adductor time frame
B-3mo
Toe grasp
B-8 to 15 mo
