Function of Muscular System
Muscles are bundles, sheets, or rings of tissue that produce movement by contracting and pulling on the structures to which they are attached.
muscles
bundles of parallel muscle tissue fibers
produce movement, hold body erect, and generate heat
muscle tissue fibers
make up muscles
skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
three types of muscles
voluntary muscles
a person consciously chooses which muscles to contract and how long and hard to contract them
ex) skeletal muscles of arms and legs
involuntary muscles
under control of the subconscious regions of the brain
ex) smooth muscles in internal organs and cardiac muscles
skeletal muscle
directly or indirectly attached to bones and produce voluntary movement of the skeleton
striated muscle
another name for skeletal muscles
b/c of its striped appearance under a microscope
fascia
fibrous connective tissue that wraps each skeletal muscles in layers
tendon
when fascia tapers at each end of a skeletal muscle
very strong
inserts into the periosteum covering a bone to anchor the muscle to the bone
motor neurons
stimulate skeletal muscles
myoneural junction
point at which the motor nerve contacts a muscle fiber
smooth muscles
found in walls of the hollow organs (stomach, tube shaped, airways, blood vessels)
lacks the striations of skeletal muscle
visceral muscle
another name for smooth muscles
cardiac muscle
makes up the wall of the heart
each involuntary contraction squeezes to pump blood
