Compromise of 1820 (Missouri Compromise)
3 part compromise: Missouri would enter union as a slave state, Maine would enter as a free, 36°30' line in LA Purchase = everything above is free, everything below is slave.

Compromise of 1850
5 Part compromise: Popular Sovereignty in Mexican Cession, abolition of slave trade in Washington D.C., more strict fugitive slave law, California was admitted as a free state, Texas was paid $ to give up territory.
Overturned the MO Compromise. Introduced popular sovereignty into Kansas and Nebraska. Led to "Bleeding Kansas."
Dred Scott Decision
Supreme Court Decision that declared slaves were property, African Americans were not citizens, and Congress could not regulate slavery in territories.
John Brown's Raid at Harpers Ferry
John Brown's attempt to start a slave rebellion. This led to many in the South believing more attacks on slavery were coming.
Election of 1860
Lincoln won the election on a free-soil platform. He did not wish to abolish slavery, but to keep it from spreading.
