common denominator

two fractions with the same denominator. (1/2 and 2/3 have 6 as a common denominator)

frequency table

a chart on which data is tallied to find the frequency of events or values

line plot

a sketch of data in which check marks or Xs above a labeled line show the frequency of each value

maximum

the largest amount, the greatest number in a set of data

minimum

the smallest amount, the smallest number in a set of data

mode

the value or values that occur most often in a set of data

simplest form

a fraction that cannot be renamed in simpler form--also known as lowest terms or reduced

stem-and-leaf plot

a display of data in which digits with larger place values are "stems" and digits with smaller place values are "leaves"

median

the middle value in a set of data when the data are listed in order from smallest to largest

mean

an average that is the sum of a set of numbers divided by the number of numbers in the set

range

the difference between the maximum and the minimum in a set of data, how far apart they are
